The IFPS shall be responsible for deciding the assignment and definition of qualifying prefix digits

for international recognition. At present, only three digits have been allocated:

0 Applies to all non-qualified produce and is generally presented without the leading

"zero" digit.

8 Genetically modified

9 Organic

Subject: [UrbanCropCircle] FW: PLU codes for produce

I haven't checked this site out, but this looks useful. Those little labels on fruit are so pesky. Maybe they have a good use. I did know about the "9" digit number, but not the "8". A friend from France had to point it out.

"Although the U.S. does not require GMOs to be labeled, you can still find out whether or not your produce is genetically engineered, by looking at its PLU code. For example:
a.. A conventionally grown product carries a 4-digit PLU code (Ex: conventionally grown banana: 4011)
b.. An organic product carries a 5-digit code, starting with the number 9: (Ex: organic banana: 94011)
c.. A genetically engineered (GE or GMO) product has a 5-digit code, starting with the number 8: (Ex: GE banana: 84011)"
