This is a very cool idea...
Has anyone used burlap this way...does it work like cardboard...and how many layers would one need? I am guessing 2 layers and it would break down more slowly....
What do you think?

Dear fellow gardeners,
Here's a place to get lots of burlap bags cheaply.

Many, many large burlap coffee bags for garden or...?Date: 2010-12-27, 10:13AM
I've got hundreds of big burlap bags - all were from large sacks of green coffee beans, emptied only a short time ago. All are very clean (though if you're lucky you'll still find a stray bean or two in them :)
These are fantastic natural garden/landscaping/weedblock material - water runs through easily, but weeds can't pop up from underneath. Burlap holds mulch easily on top really well and looks completely natural, unlike cardboard or plastic. It's also great for soil-building sheet mulching (Google "Interbay sheet mulch"), erosion control, container gardening (much much lighter and Greener than a wooden half-barrel!), construction (damp-curing concrete), bulk/dry storage, decorating, and sewing / crafting projects.
There are three main types/grades of bags available:
Weedblock/erosion grade: These are slit up the sides or near the top and may have a few small tears - none of which matters, since you'll be laying them down flat on the ground anyways.
.99/bag, with discounts for quantity purchases (starting at 20 bags in one purchase) and even larger discounts if you want a lot of bags
(more than 100) for covering big areas. (This same grade, but from 100% organic coffee are available as well, for 20 cents extra/bag - mix-and-match fine.)
Planter/container garden grade: These are carefully opened at the top - not cut at all - so they can be used for fabric "half barrels" to do container planting
on your deck, driveway, or garden space. Or for dry storage - or sack races!
$2/bag, with quantity discounts available here as well. Organic bags of the same type also available, fifty cents more.
Craft/project/fashion grade and framable-quality Art grade: These are very clean bags with cool lettering (for the "craft" bags) or lovely
pictures/graphics/colors (for the "art" bags). Maybe 1 out of 100 bags we see makes these grades - they're really beautiful.
$2-3/bag (for craft/project), $3-5/bag (for framable Art); discounts available for volume purchases here as well.
Pick 'em up anytime in Ballard / Fremont anytime. I can leave them out on the porch so you can grab them at your convenience, day or night, keeping it simple. If you want really large quantities (100 bags or more, up to full pallet loads of 250+ bags) you can pick up from the warehouse in Ballard (near Trader Joe's) or I can deliver within Seattle city limits for a flat delivery fee, depending on the location.
Thanks!

Note #1: We communicate best and most quickly via email, so make sure you reply with a valid email address we can respond to you with.
Note #2: If you're reading this, be assured that at least 500 or more bags are still available. We''ll always update it if we're below that number.
Note #3: Bag sizes vary slightly, but the majority average about 38" tall by 28" wide, so cover about 7.5 square feet - ergo, ten bags cover roughly 75 square feet at their unopened (double) thickness and with a slight overlap between bags.
Finally #4: We really, really can't ship bags - sorry, not very Green, and anyways they're much too heavy: the cost of parcel/postal shipping would be greater than the cost of bags themselves. (Though if you want full pallets - 250+ bags - via prepaid truck freight, we're happy to talk).
