Dear fellow gardeners,
As you may know, UCC adopted Nickelsville last spring and provided the
residents with potting soil, containers
and plant starts. The group recently moved from its Skyway location to the
parking lot of University Congregational
Church, at NE 45th St. and 15th Ave. NE. I visited Nickelsville today.

Gardener Nate showed me his plants, all of which are in containers. He has
cherry tomatoes,
larger tomatoes, chard, basil, calendula, borage, strawberry plants (no
berries this year, just leaves)
and some tall corn plants. Nate said heThe garden survived two moves. He's
happy with the progress
of the garden.

The gardeners would like to grow winter crops in their containers. They are
interested in in kale, spinach,
winter density lettuce, leeks, garlic and whatever else thrives in the
winter. They've been planting individual
plants in red plastic Folger's coffee cans, and could use more big
containers, as well as seasonal plant starts.

Nate and some of the other residents have rigged up a bicycle to power car
batteries, creating
enough juice to recharge cell phones. Once they have a permanent location,
they plan to build
a greenhouse, set up some solar panels, and catch rain in 55-gallon drums.

The folks at Nickelsville could use donations of:

blankets, tarps, batteries and men's clothing, especially underwear

Please bring what you can to next Monday's meeting. I will collect the
donations and take
them to the U District next week.

Thanks,

Susan
