My previous post reminded me that I hadn't reported out about our Global Work Party (the local Sustainable Ballard piece) on 10/10/10.

After years of talking about it, it finally came to be.  Thanks to all who helped kick it over the edge (Ingela Warnestrand, Jenny Heins, Bridget Smith).

We had a good showing.  SB used Brown Paper Tickets to sign up: $5 for a lecture and $45 to build a bin.  Bridget was great at getting a local carpenter from Green Building Guild to pre-cut the wood according to the Seattle Tilth plans.  Ingela got some tents, and tacked the worm building onto the project she lead at Ballard Community Center.  We got cheap hinges at REstore.  I supplied worms from my bin.

We started out with me telling about my worm bin, but since my training style is to engage the students, we got lots of input from folks who had done worm bins in the past.  Everyone learned something, even those who had bins.

Constructing them in a group was fun.  John, the carpenter (sorry I don't know his last name) did one in steps while the others followed him.  There were 4 folks working alone and one couple.  How cool is that to build a worm bin on a Saturday with your honey?  Way cool.  Way green.  Way Seattle!!!!  One woman made one for her mom.  Two others made bins to replace ones that had rotted away.

It was very helpful to have extra screw guns available.  Again, thanks (John and Michael).

And when it was all over, I gave every bin a cup or so of worms to start with.  Most folks hadn't expected that.  It was great to see them take away a completed project, ready run (no batteries needed).

And, just today, the sole couple who showed up for the lecture but not the construction, sent an email to say that they had built one of their own.  They're stopping by tomorrow to get worms.

Wiggly yours,
Michael

P.S.  Keep the worm-building-party in mind.  I'd be glad to repeat it some time.  It's got some "barn building" energy about it, but with much less commitment required.
