For Immediate Release
Island Press, Town Hall Seattle, and IslandWood are delighted to bring
author and activist Darrin Nordahl to our area this week. He is excited
to share ideas with Northwesterners so I hope you are able to join us
at one of the events listed below and join in the discussion.
Darrin Nordahl author of Public Produce: The New Urban Agriculture
(Island Press) will present how his vision of municipal agriculture may
be practiced locally at IslandWood April 28 at 7:00 p.m. and in the
Soundings from Island Press Environmental Lecture Series at Town Hall
Seattle, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. From Davenport, Iowa, he has appeared
on National Public Radio, writes for the Huffington Post, and is a
regular public speaker on food, farming and city planning. Nordahl is
available for interviews and copies of his book will be available for
purchase at the readings listed below and through www.islandpress.org
The author and advocate wants America to overhaul its food system, from
what we grow, how we grow it and where we grow it. Food affects our
health, energy system and even national security.
And for Nordahl this is also a matter of community. He writes:
"What we are just beginning to witness in this country is a
paradigmatic shift in public food policy. It is not being initiated by
central government, but by a local one. This unique brand of urban
agriculture - what can more descriptively be termed "municipal
agriculture" - is promising to restore individual and community
health, to the benefit of our cities, and to the benefit of our
nation."
