My friend, and photographer extraordinaire, Shannon Welles, is working on what sounds like a fabulous project, Pollinator Pathway (see below). She's in need of additional pledges of hours - and needs to know ASAP, but the good news is that the hours pledged won't actually be required until the fall. I hope you'll consider being part of this project! I'm sure many of you are aware of the recent crashes in honeybee populations (ala' Colony Collapse Disorder); anything that can be done to help provide food for all pollinators, particularly native pollinators, and especially in long corridors, is a very good thing. Here's the link to send in a pledge of hours, along with your name and address: http://www.pollinatorpathway.com/contact

THANKS!!

Hi Julianne,
I am working on a project called the Pollinator
Pathway, a plan to make a mile-long series of pollinator-friendly
gardens along Seattle's Columbia street from 12th to 29th avenues. We
are applying for a grant with the City to plant the next 16 gardens. Do
you like gardening? Would you be interested in pledging hours toward
helping plant gardens in the fall? All pledges will be matched directly
with cash from the City; any amount helps! (We just got 1400 hours
pledged, but we need 1100 more!) Its fun.. you'll get to dig in the
dirt with nice people, and we'll serve lemonade..

Let me know if
you'd like to help this fall, and - please spread the word! I need to
know by Thursday if you want to pledge hours. If you are interested
please send me a message with the amount of hours and your address.

thanks!
Shannon

Thomas Jefferson said he didn’t think we could have democracy unless at least 20% of the population was self-supporting on small farms so they were independent enough to be able to tell an oppressive government to stuff it. It is very difficult to control people who can create products without purchasing inputs from the system, who can market their products directly thus avoiding the involvement of mercenary middlemen, who can butcher animals and preserve foods without reliance on industrial conglomerates, and who can’t be bullied because they can feed their own faces.

- Eliot Coleman,

“I’d put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don’t have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that,” the great American inventor Thomas Edison said in 1931.

If stories come to you, care for them. And learn to give them away where they are needed. Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive.

Let only laughter scar your face.

Rwandan saying

" As you turn the earth to plant your own backyard garden, plant an extra row for the hungry. When it is time to harvest your labor of love, drop your donation at the emergency food pantry or soup kitchen in your community. In this way, even the neediest among us will know that the earth has not forgotten their name.”
