Last summer when I was up at the Bullock Farm I became somewhat familiar with the solar drier they've built out of an old refrigerator >;-) They painted it black (though I'm sure adding some fun designs in other colors is allowed), situated it in a very sunny location with a slight slope below it where they had a solar panel enclosed in what was basically a cold frame, vented the hot air from that into the fridge, and then vented the top of the fridge to keep the air moving. All the pieces were things that could be scrounged and it was highly effective. Hi fellow gardeners,<br>
I have been reading on the Internet about making solar food dryers. This<br>
year I'm growing a lot of fruits and veggies and want to preserve them<br>
without freezing or canning the food. I've found some good plans and<br>
descriptions for several kinds of dryers. I'm not very handy at building<br>
things, so I'd prefer to buy a commercial solar food dehydrator. There don't<br>
seem to be any for sale. It looks like I will have to make one myself.<br>

Is anybody in the Urban Crop Circle group or any other group in Sustainable<br>
Ballard teaching people how to make solar food dryers? If not, is there any<br>
interest in forming a group to work together to make a prototype, and then<br>
help others to build such dryers? Many of my berries will be ripe in a<br>
couple of weeks and I'd love to have one of the cardboard/painted<br>
plywood/screen racks model ready to use.<br>

Let me know what you think. If nobody else is already coordinating a solar<br>
food dryer project, I'd be willing to do it, even though I have almost no<br>
carpenter skills.<br>

What is the date of the next Urban Crop Circle meeting? I work on Mondays,<br>
but only until June 9. I can come to Monday meetings over the summer. When<br>
is the next meeting of the Crop Circle gardeners? When is the next tour of<br>
Ingela's great chicken house and garden?<br>
Because of my work schedule, I haven't been able to come to any Urban Crop<br>
Circle events. I am eager to meet ya'll and learn more about gardening<br>
organically in the city.<br>

better between group time! In the meantime, the monthly Get Together is<br>
coming up. How is your garden? Bring your questions and know-how, because<br>
Julianne Jaz will be leading the group on the topic of Lasagna Gardening,<br>
and layering and mulching. If you're not familiar with lasagna gardening<br>
(I'm sure I should be inserting a tm there), this is an entirely new way of<br>
thinking about gardening and is a serious departure from traditional garden<br>
practices that include tilling and such. Layering mimics what Mother Nature<br>
does, reduces maintenance and most importantly protects the soil and our<br>
soil critter friends.<br>

We'll have tea and goodies of course! Feel free to pass this along to any<br>
folks who may be interested, this is an open group and there is No charge!<br>
